​Amihan's
​STEM Challenge

The Challenge:
STEM lesson about the water cycle that effectively supports Amihan's language development while ensuring meaningful engagement with grade-level content.  
 You can decide which of the 3 areas of the CHALLENGE to complete:  Answers can be requested by emailing [email protected]
  1.  Create two (2) clear content learning targets about the water cycle and at least two (2) specific language objectives targeting Amihan's proficiency levels. 
  2. Scaffolding Strategies: Provide sentence frames appropriate for entering-level English proficiency and list three different types of visual supports to provide Amihan. 
  3. Assessment: Create options for Amihan to demonstrate content understanding with minimal language demands. 

 Success Criteria
  1. Appropriateness of language supports for Amihan's proficiency levels
  2. Integration of multiple modes of representation (visual, kinesthetic, auditory)
  3. Clarity and specificity of scaffolding strategies
Extension Question
How would you modify this lesson if Amihan's speaking score suddenly improved to 2.5 (Emerging to Developing) while other scores remained the same?

​Language Proficiency: ​Amihan's WIDA scores:
  • Reading: 1.7 (Entering to Emerging)
  • Writing: 1.1 (Entering)
  • Speaking: 1.4 (Entering)
  • Listening: 1.7 (Entering to Emerging)
These scores indicate that Amihan is in the early stages of English language development across all domains, with slightly stronger skills in receptive domains (reading and listening) compared to productive domains (writing and speaking).
